Arnel Pineda in GQ’s June issue

I‘ve just watched the Jones movie and it did not bore me at all even if there were seemingly ten of us in the audience inside a very comfy AMC cinema. It wasn’t FULL as expected because it was Monday. I even couched in my foot on the other seat like I’m watching a flat oversize screen at home — I’d wish. I’ve seen all the previous Indy movies so it didn’t made me feel like “I’m getting old for this” kind of movie. Well until 19 years later, Ford and Speilberg still managed to make this 4th sequel a fun to watch.

The kids will love it because it has few extra tricks and gizmos that we’ve all seen from Spielberg’s Close Encounters, A.I. and War of the Worlds. In between the running and the jumping, it also includes the encounter of father and son and — ALIENS. Cate Blanchett makes a good villainies with her Russian accent - she looks FIERCE. I enjoyed her sword-fighting scene in a military duck with Shia LaBoeuf (Transformers).

And speaking of Shia, I was just passing through a magazine stand at the grocery store for a milk when I saw him on the cover of a GQ magazine. It’s not a cheap magazine with a cheap celebs - so while flipping thru the pages, I read across a music section featuring Arnel Pineda and The Journey article in four glossy pages. To save my last penny for a milk, instead I took these photos but didn’t buy the magazine.

When the legendary rock band Journey needed to replace their lead singer, they turned to the Internet, where they found clips of an unknown 40-year-old singer from the Philippines. Arnel Pineda was just a small-town boy, living in a lonely world, covering Journey songs in no-name bar bands, but he had the voice—and the hair—of a natural-born rock star. Now he’s living a dream that goes on, and on, and on, and on…

In the early ’90s, New Age relocated to Hong Kong, a time-honored path for -Filipino musicians seeking their fortune. It didn’t go so well. Playing the same cover tunes every night began to drive Pineda crazy. He was bored, so he drank, took drugs, and generally pursued any and all forms of rock ’n’ roll self-destruction available to a boy from Manila adrift on the Hong Kong bar circuit. Before long, he’d wrecked his voice. When he found he could no longer hit the high notes in Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight,” he went to a doctor, who told him to retire. He was 27. Read more.

Arnel Pineda performs on Ellen with Journey.

And this was Arnel few years ago during his Hong Kong gigs at The Cavern where we used to frequent for some night clubbing at LKF.

You’re welcome!

I am not familiar with The Journey’s music except for that “Open Arms”. I recalled, he really did some cover versions of The Journey’s music during her HK gigs.

His 1999 album was dominatred by tagalog, love songs - pero ok lang.

I heard, it was a wreck adding aliens in the sequel. The appetite comparing from the previous-es just made it completely different. There was just too much use of special effects but it was predictable nevertheless.

But you know, we have to taste lemonades sometimes.

I’m also a fan. his voice is so flawless especially when he sang “eversince the world began”. Many americans hate him for his imitation of steve perry, but i think its inevitable since he is now the vocalist of journey.
