The Pawn

April 10, 08

1950's WanchaiThe Pawn. It’s one of the oldest colonial building known as the “Pawnshop”. The building itself dates back to 1888 and was formerly occupied by the Woo Cheong Pawn Shop. It is near where I live, so near that you can literally throw a stone from my flat and hit the window, and is now opened for business.

The people behind the The Press Room comes up with another unique restaurant, The Pawn built in a semi-historic setting gives a nice touch to the very crowded District. This old building seems to be the last one standing which has been preserved and overhauled occupying one of the few old buildings left in Wanchai. The Pawn is located near the former site of “Wedding Card Street,” one of the casualties of this round of Wanchai’s redevelopment.

Looking at the history of this District, Wanchai is dramatically creating a huge transformation over the last two years. I think Hong Kong should keep the old buildings around and keep them as is, as it adds more unique blend in today’s infrastructures. Since Hong Kong has very few modern offerings in old settings, The Pawn makes it more unique. It really has a very pleasing veranda that overlooks the Southorn Playground in Johnston Road.

Looking at the outside, it looks old but when you get inside, furnishing is very simple but pleasing. The occupant have preserved the buildings dignity whilst putting it to a new use. And that’s all what matters, keeping the history alive.

One day, I will go there and try one of their signature dish. A lobster, maybe.

Whole blocks of Wanchai have been taken down over the last year to make room for new building complexes. Hong Kong’s long march to being the world’s most vertical city continues, as the low-rise buildings that formerly occupied the land are razed.

Pao, I’m sure it’s going to be more of an Italian or French cuisine which I don’t mind at all as long there’s a grilled fish salad and an ice lemon tea.

Hey K, I have just been there today. Friends of mine wanted to go to “the Pond” and it was just until I was standing right in front of the building when it clicked and I was like “hey tika, I know this from somewhere….. aaaaah Pawn not Pond!”
I loooove the interior and i loove sitting outside, you just feel like you’re on holidays. And when a heavy truck passes by you get this Manila ‘peeling’.
Mahal ang glass of wine! It’s HKD 86!

Hahaha Dey-zee, coincidentally SCMP just featured this restaurant on their Sunday POST magazine section. I hope Johnston Rd is sctrictly for the TRAMcars only as it gives highlight to the area itself, diba?

And that crispy pig ear ($95) dish sounds appetizing to me pero uunga, ang mahal ng REDS.

Belle, guess what this entry is the most top search via my dashboard, so I am now calling this new restaurant “the PAWN Star”.

When are you visiting HK?
