… so then off we went to Macao for a day trip sightseeing. Such a beautiful colorful colonial history and natural scenic beauty. Once you’ve explored the old there is plenty to draw you back to the present. Casinos, casinos and more casinos everywhere. I tried a slot machine and lost twenty bucks because it’s difficult to hit the jackpot - the damn machine was smarter than me because that’s what it’s built for. Doh! Despite the lack of interest in playing Baccarat or whatever you call it, the Portuguese food was superb.
Macao has a rich heritage from both its Chinese and Portuguese past that includes many outstanding examples of western and oriental art and culture. Here you will find Chinese temples, catholic churches; ancient forts and other historical relics within a modern environment that bear testimony to a cultural blend of east and west.
Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, a main downtown thoroughfare in the southwestern part of the city, is called San Ma Lo (New Street) in Chinese by its residents. It stretches from Avenida da Praia Grande to the Inner Harbour, a distance of less than a mile. With the main square, Largo do Senado and several affiliated streets, this area is the most popular shopping and tourist part of the city.
This splendid square, Largo do Senado, with its wave-patterned pavement and central fountain is a highlight of the area. The surrounding simple, elegant Portuguese and baroque style buildings house many international branded clothes shops and restaurants. An exploration of the narrow alleyways that radiate from the square will open up to the visitor yet more fantastic places including curio markets, pharmacies, snack stalls and jewelry shops selling dazzling items.
Colonized by the Portuguese in 1557, Macao was the oldest European outpost in China. In 1987, Portugal and China reached an agreement to return Macao to Chinese rule on Dec. 20, 1999. They agreed on provisions that ensured the autonomy of Macao, including its right to elect local leaders, the right of its residents to travel freely, and the right to maintain its way of life for 50 years after the start of Chinese rule.

Range, the old colonial buildings looks fascinating to me, indeed beautiful - forget the Casinos.
i would also like to visit macao. not too play casinos nor baccarat, but to see the blend of western and oriental architecture. i heard na it’s just a ferry boat ride from HK. sana in the near future…

Out of curiosity I tried. Imagine this woman was using 3 slot machines for 3 days already. Daming Pinoy staff sa shops ng Venetian Hotel.
Tai Pa, the other part of Macao, where the Venetian Hotel is situated is becoming more a la Las Vegas, with massive construction going on, probably a big park like the Universal Studio will also be part of the attraction.
But it’s always hard to miss to see the old Macao, and the delicious “egg tart”. Lutong Macao talaga, hehehe.
I’ve always wanted to go there. I’ve been to HK but not there!

Wendy, if you’re planning to visit HK again, don’t miss to visit Macao - besides it’s just an hour trip. You don’t have to bring lots of moolah - sightseeing is more fun already than spending something in the shopping mall. Plus, you need to bring a good camera and friends.
Wow! Macao certainly looks prettier in your photos. The first time I went there was 2 years ago when we did a shoot at Fisherman’s Wharf. Grabe ang init! We weren’t able to tour outside the Wharf though because we had to dash back to HK for another shoot. Wish I could go back there just for leisure.

Hi Jayme, it was my 3rd visit this year. First, we had this corporate trip to the Venetian Hotel and I was like “WOW”, the place is unbelievable. So then I decided to visit again but we only spent much of our time in the old Macao. I saw the Fisherman’s Wharf and didn’t go there (it looks deserted during daylight), so perhaps another alternative to check that place.
Macao is becoming more attractive given upcoming new and massive infrastructure here and there. It has been exciting to see Macau create what could be considered a world-class tourist industry. It offers a wide choice of hotels, resorts, sports facilities, restaurants and casinos. You should come and visit again.
the last time i was in macao was in 1995 (yata), and it wasn’t as touristy before. siguro if and when hubby and i decide to go back to HK, we might just swing by there, too. after seeing your pics, i think the side trip will be worth it.

Meeya, you might still see the old Macao, it has always been like that but more or so new buildings are now erected at the other side of Macao (which I think people will call it “the little Las Vegas”) so there are plenty to “do” if you’re interested into gambling, hahaha. Shopping malls in Venetian is beautiful but I find their restaurant a bit expensive. It’s worth it talaga, say mga 2 days ok na for a visit. Alam mo naman ako mahilig sa historical buildings and heritage.
Celine Dion is “TAKING CHANCES” on her World Tour concert this March 15 in Venetian Arena in Macau. Mahal nga lang ang ticket, ka-asar sya ha?

I am using Nikon Coolpix P5100, mura lang, a “miniature” style (well the quality is similar) to the Nikon D40.

wow. I never realized that Macau is such a beautiful place. My sister went there a couple of years ago but I was not interested because I was probably ignorant of Macau’s culture. But now that I see the beauty of it it makes me wanna go there. Napakaganda. sa unang tingin para syang europe.

Bluep, unlike HK, it looks pretty laid back there. But on the most part in downtown you’ll see lots of Pinoys however the locals are usually come from the Mainland, it was weird for me to see them in every Casinos with bags of cash.
The photos are beautiful, I love the architect designed of the building. Seeing your photos makes me want to go out and buy a new camera.

Ginger, I am not a serious photographer yet, I really need a “serious” camera once I get to know the dramas of taking pictures. I am not complaining, It’s a cool gadget and it takes time to get a perfect picture, well it’s not always an assurance that you’d get a nice shot because you use an expensive one. I mean what’s the use of an expensive camera if the person behind it doesn’t know how to use it, right?

Ambo, naku sisiw lang sayo to travel from HK - Macau, you don’t even need to apply for a tourist visa. Dala ka lang ng maraming moolah if you’re planning to gamble around Casinos. You gonna love it there for sure.
