Lucky is the home with a plant that blooms on New Year’s Day

The chinese tradition has it that a household should have a live blooming plants to symbolize rebirth and new growth. Flowers are believed to be symbolic of wealth and high positions in one’s career. In a more elaborate settings, plum blossoms just starting to bloom are arranged with bamboo and pine sprigs, the grouping symbolizing friends, reliability and perseverance; the bamboo is known for its compatibility, its utility and its flexible stems for furniture and other articles; the evergreen pine evokes longevity and steadiness.

The Chinese firmly believe that without flowers, there would be no formation of any fruits. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to have flowers and floral decorations. They are the emblems of reawakening of nature, they are also intimately connected with superstition and with the wish for happiness during the ensuing year.

Guess why I took these macro-shots photos? It symbolizes that I am pleased with my new Nikon Coolpix P5100 toy. I played around with it just now and “wow” look at those cool shots.

This means, I am getting ready to take more photos this New Year and the days to come. I am thinking of an upgrade for a pro flickr account so that I can upload more photos. And once again to become the more ’serious photographer’ in the future, don’t you think?

Boasting 12-megapixels, the P5100 offers a 2.5-inch LCD display — modest by today’s standards — as well as an optical viewfinder, a feature that is often omitted in digital compacts these days. This is a plus for saving battery and viewing your subjects in harsh sunlight when the LCD can become washed out. Optical image stabilisation is one of three options for reducing blur, along with Anti-Shake and High Sensitivity modes which can be found on the mode dial. The P5100 also boasts a maximum light sensitivity of ISO 3,200, but only when shooting at 5-megapixels or lower. -more reviews via cnet.com.au

Ate Beng, it took me hours to decide between the Canon or the Nikon. I insisted on my brother to decide instead. I am not good at electronics & gadget choices but this one is quite stunning. Kaya ayan, gumastos ulet, but I think the very essence of being “luxurious” (like you, into LV or Gucci’s) is that we should not feel guilty after we buy them, diba?

Looks like a good point and shoot camera you got there.

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Feb 7, 2008

Range, yup as simple as that. The shop said that I can also buy lens if I want to extra gadgetize this camera. The deal was not bad, it includes a mini tripod, a case and SD card. The big bulky Canon is too complicated for me, the one you mentioned in your blog I think.

These are beautiful shots. I’ve wanted a new camera, and have been thinking about taking some classes. I’m sooo jealous of you; I don’t see how you can afford so many cool toys.

Hahaha Ginger, I am not giving you the impression that I am rich. I saved for a year to buy this gagdet, cuz the Olympus digi I got last time was ‘harassed” by my sister. Well now it’s the New Year, I hope I can get Lai See pockets until next week to cover all the costs I spent for the camera. So don’t be jealous, let’s go out and ‘harass’ the married people for the Lai See, haahaha.

Wow! Beautiful pictures!
You’ve got a good camera. Mine sucks!
Happy New Year, K!

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Feb 7, 2008

Diane, glad you like it. I am not really into “perfectness” (well I do in some point) but photographs without added “dramatic feature” in it don’t get much impression even if you’re just using a cam-phone. It’s like storytelling, the better you know your story before you shoot, the better prepared you’ll be to find visuals that serve that story, what works, what doesn’t - it’s what the most powerful and effective of photography… I think.

Dimaks, your recent shots are actually extra-super-cool. I like the way you capture nature like the snow. I think you’re a good photographer, you should take more photos, 6mega or 12mega doesn’t give much differene in there, innit? How much kaya ang pro-flickr account fees? How about the zoomr account?

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Feb 7, 2008

Dimaks, that expensive? It sucks that all of my old photos are nowhere to find in flickr. I am worried tho if I’d take these photography seriously, I need a permanent storage site online (free) that can hold every photos I can upload. Do you think it’s the same with the zooomr account?

Sha, diba yours is an ultra cool camera? I don’t know if I can spend that much for a lens, $500? Ang mahal pala. Plum blossoms is the “chinese new year’s flower” It blooms on the New Year obviously. Dami kong “thank you” cards na papadalhan pala.

Wavatar julie» added these pithy words on: Feb 7, 2008

Wonderful photos, K. That pink flower is just lovely.

Ow, with my “black thumb” I am not able to grow flowering plant, even those that are low-maintenance, hehe.

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Feb 7, 2008

Teacher, this plant doesn’t need watering, actually babad mo lang sa tubig, then few days before the Chinese New Year, bubuka na sila. How about cactus plant? Diba no need watering na yun? Hahaha.

Hirap nga lang mag upload ng photos sa flickr. Pwede na, diba?

Hello K!

I’m a flower person. I love flowers but I don’t know all the names of the flowers. :) We don’t have flowers at home too except an orchid which actually has two flowers right now that I always look at every morning when I get up. :)

As much as I wanted to have plants and flowers, I can’t, as I always forget to water them. Hahaha… E di nalanta. Sayang naman.

Anyway, have a nice week! Happy Chines New Year din pala!

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Feb 7, 2008

Sofie, if only I have a terraza, backyard or a big house, I know how to do some gardening and grow plants. In HK, there’s no room for this.

Jaypee, I bought it at the shop nearby, around US$385. Expensive ba? I honestly don’t shoppe online, safe ba yun?

Range, thank you, I made an account there and I have used it once, stored a few photos but most likely, I’ll stick with flickr. So I’m still considering if I’d buy the pro-account. Do you think uploading photos direct to my blog is advisable? I know it’s pretty easy to do but I don’t know how much space the blog can handle images/photos?
