Fall 2006 catalog, originally uploaded by: fd
We all know that the holiday season is upon us when the leaves swirl down, the first chill wind blows and surprisingly our mailboxes goes bulge with the latest batch of catalogs. For marketers, the holiday season always come early.
The other day, I have found out at least a dozen upon dozens of catalogs for every kitchen gadget, home improvement, and decorating accessory known to man. I was wondering how the hell did they get into my mailbox? I freaked out. My mailbox needs Advil after the holiday season, I must tell you.
What surprises me is that, none of those catalogs says it’s Christmas. Most of these catalog has prints like “All Things Holiday,” “Holiday Catalogs,” “Holiday Shipping Dates,” and “Holiday Recipes.” Why is that the holiday season is downplaying the use of such phrase “Christmas” in favor of the less-specific word “Holiday”?
So out of curiosity, I started reading one of the kitchen catalogs that offers around HK$199.99 for two sets of cutlers, HK$129.99, HK$499.99 and HK$1,999.99 on other things. What’s with the .99 cents? We all know that a HK$129.99 is already an equivalent to HK$130.00, innit? How about catalogs that offers you a variety of discounts, “save 25% on all orders over $1000″. Crap. “Spend and save 20% off at book shops with any purchase HK$500 all valid through the end of December”. Crap. “Get free gift wrap, a free sample on your first purchase of a Gift set worth HK$599.99.” I am not that good in math, but a couple of sets on cutlers worth HK$199.99 is not giving me much of the offer if the original price is basically almost the same if I’d buy just one? Where’s the savings there? Very tricky.
I am too traumatized with all these offers and none of those has ever mentioned “Christmas”.
Aside from the bills of course that have stacked up pretty much in my mailbox and a lot of others things, thanks God that few of the mails are from people that made me smile. Christmas cards. Isn’t that a nice thing to receive during holidays Christmas time specially from people I didn’t even met? Last year, I’d had received a dozen of cards from blog friends, so in particular, I have a love for Christmas cards. I always like nice surprises in my mailbox, to know that someone is thinking of me and by reading someone’s personalized handwritten greetings is indeed ‘tis the season to be jolly.
So what am I gonna do with all these catalogs? Maybe I’ll end up with a fun craft and a great gift out of these and before I start dumping those catalogs off for recycling, I saw a 50% off on one of my favorite brand is on offer until next week. I must investigate!
And oh, thank you Thess for the nice Xmas card (pictured) from the Netherlands.
