Prosperous Piggy Bank, originally uploaded by: jaevus
Before the end of the year, I’m going to try something new: I’m saving all my loose change in a jar so that by the end of every year, I can buy a small gift for my nephews. It’s not hard to do this really. Since the change will just sits in a jar all year, it’s an automatic savings for the next expensive holiday season.
The other day when I opened my tiny cabinet to look for some Sardines, I was appalled that the only thing I found was a toothpick. Why in God’s name I use a toothpick when I don’t cook and eat in my flat? And because I got so hungry, the only recourse is to buy a frozen food down the 7-11 stores. Maybe a can of sardines would only cost me a few bout of dollars.
With this in mind, I thought I could make use of the coins I have collected the past years. Well if yours in like many households, loose change accumulates in the couch cushions, in the laundry, on top of dressers and desks and in perhaps in a drawer. There are many ways to collect the loose change that floats about the house so that it might be used for something besides collecting dust.
And luckily, I got a total of a few bucks but ashamed the 7-11 would laugh at me if I’d dare bring my jar to pay for the cans. Surprisingly the store accepted all the coins. They said, next time I can send them to the bank where they have machines that will sort and count your change.
I think collecting loose change is also a great way to teach young children these days the value of saving money. I remember as a kid, our parents would provide us a piggy bank, nothing fancy, an empty Alaska milk canister actually help us how to learn to save and have fun with it. Every time I feed the piggy, it has more money. Only when our parents wouldn’t give us money to buy a bubble gum, boy did I ever use a knife to take the coins one by one under my bed out of the canister and spend it with pride, “uy ang dami kong pera”.
Either way, if we save those loose change put in mind that it may help to go towards a movie and ice cream, or it can be donated to charity. Well, the choice is yours.
Do you still save those loose change even if you’re already “older”? If you don’t intend to keep it, throw them my way so that when there’s a moment of need, I have something to kill the pig “In Case of an Emergency”. Only Hong Kong dollars is accepted. Now start saving those pennies! A plus savings are far better than the minus savings, innit?
Asides: I’m extending my warm “Welcome Back” in blogosphere to my good friend Isay in Oz. + “Other than that a lot of things haven’t changed when it comes to what I like. I still love everything that has to do with fashion - clothes, shoes, accessories, make up - the whole lot. Although at times I really don’t give a sh—t with these things… seriously! I strongly feel though that shopping is still the best therapy. I’m obsessed with toiletries as I have years of supply of shampoos, conditioners, body washes and soaps.” - Isay
