Ann Pamintuan, a Filipino home designer did not set out to be a designer but her graceful works that are meant for lounging have helped define Asian interior design.

What’s amazing is that her designs are highly intellectual, contemporary and functional sensibilties. They are meant for lounging so as to promote time to bond with family. This sense of family, I feel, is very Filipino. I cannot feel so much prouder because her designs are very intimate which are ‘created to accomodate everyone’.

Ann PamintuanHer signature design is the iconic Cocoon wire chair (pictured), a woven spherical lounge set that uses metal strands. She says, she got into design when she was looking for an alternative occupation that did not require her to be in the office full time, as she was looking after her kids at the time.

Today, Pamintuan is considered one of the pillars in the Philippines design’s industry. “Philippine design has always been original, but never before have we been marketed abroad so aggresively. This forces us not only to be original, but also to put more effort into branding. Philippine-made has to be synonymous with ‘originality’ and ‘quality’,” she added.

Galing talaga ng Pinoy!

+ Ann Pamintuan is president of the Philippine Confederation of Exporters and helps promote Filipino designs in the highly competitive global market.
