Lego
Lego, originally uploaded by: wasme

A friend invited me for dinner at their house yesterday and after about a bunch of funny conversations, she opened this box of kids toy similar to Lego (just a little complicated) and started to playing with it. I know it’s a toy but looking at those tiny plastics, considering it’s for kids, I’d suspect, someone really needs a lot of patience in customizing its own shapes. I think the reason that parents like these toys for their little architects, is that, in the first place, “I like my kids to pretend and have fun”, she said.

Our childhood is full of magical moments, we like receiving that first dress-up doll, setting up the tracks of that first train, learning to play jacks and ball (kulelat ako lagi dito), jumping rope (kaya lang may dayaan), doing tricks with our yo-yo (with sound effects and lights), sailing a wooden boat on a pond (I enjoyed this), having an afternoon tea party with dolls and little teacups, and cooking over your little toy stove. Remember?

“How can a five year old kid build these bricks”?, I asked. Even a thirty something like me can hardly follow those simple how-to instructions. Does it matter because I am no longer a kid?

Thing is, I need brain-stimulations these days. I’m older, I know that. “But am I smarter?” How do I become smarter if I didn’t even know how to build a Lego toy? I believe that it can be done. We are what we think, right? Think about people who are book smart but street stupid, what’s with that? I am a slow learner, that’s ok. I am not obsessed with trying to learn everything too fast. Sometimes it’s hard to understand people who thinks they are always right. I think it is more positive to spend less time talking and have more time observing and listening than listening to people faking themselves being a smart one. I believe in the saying that, ‘a smart person knows how to communicate with someone in language they can understand’.

Anyways, I stumbled this guide on how to get smarter in just seven days. I find this a bit challenging. For what it’s worth, I’d like to play along with it.

A lot of people feel they are under-performing in their life, that they are letting themselves down, in terms of their ability to handle events or thinking that people at work are cleverer than them. This programme shows everyone can get smarter, and feel better, if they do these things.

Saturday: Brush your teeth with your ‘wrong’ hand and take a shower with your eyes closed.

Sunday: Do the crossword or Sudoku puzzle in your Sunday paper and take a brisk walk.

Monday: Have oily fish for dinner, and either cycle, walk or take the bus into work.

Tuesday: Select unfamiliar words from the dictionary and work them into conversations.

Wednesday: Go to yoga, Pilates or a meditation class, and talk to someone you don’t know.

Thursday: Take a different route to work; watch Countdown or Brainteaser.

Friday: Avoid caffeine or alcohol; memorise your shopping list. Source: The Guardian

But how about getting more sleep that’s actually helping us live better? Sleep is clearly important, after all, people and animals sleeps away a third of their lives, but no one knows why. I think that the above guide answers my questions. I probably need more “immaculate sleep”, deeper and slow wave sleep. With this in mind, perhaps as I’d take a shower tomorrow, I’d blindfold my eyes just to be cleverer. I believe everything is possible for as long as we’re ready to put in the amount of work necessary to make things happen. Why not, right?

Cheh, baliw. I thought blogging can drain our brains out easily. Honestly, I don’t play puzzles in newspaper. I don’t even know what SODOKU means eh paborito kung game sa newspaper eh yung, “find the difference in the picture” game or yung “connect the dots”. Madali yun diba?

you know what, i never thought of lego that way. i’ve always thought it’s part of any kid’s childhood. i grew up with lego kasi and i think it had something to do with how i see things now :) deep no? hehe. really, i think it’s a great toy. when mia grows a little older i’m letting her play with lego blocks, play doh, and toy cars even. maybe you should too. might bring back memories and long forgotten skills :)

Ris, I was thinking that the other day. I would probably buy a picture puzzle game or cut my pictures to pieces and scramble it.

i would like ninna to play lego too kaya lang, too makalat! hehehe! but i have to agree, legos help develop hand-eye coordination, not to mention cretivity and imagination.

as for sleep, you’re absolutely right. we oldies need to properly rejuvinate our brains. :)

Mee, diba ang hirap maging “writer”. And I don’t think I got the guts but whatever, kung anek anek na lang ang isulat basta pag naumpisahan ko na ng isang paragraph, y oramizmo con todo sige tapusin. I actually tried the “closing my eyes when I take shower”. Eh talaga naman we need to close our eyes eh kung pinasok ng bubbles ang mga mata eh di BULAG ako the whole day? Think, sore eyes anoh? So I think I’ll skip Saturdays (na hindi maligo?).

Sha, ok let’s try scrabble. How many words can you make? I sucked at three letters, so most of the times, I would make a guess. When I was in college, I’d keep a dictionary incase ang kalaban ko madaya. Currently into vocabulary these days. Googling is not a bad idea, afterall.

Aba pa yoga yoga ka na ngayon Wind. Did you try to touch the floor without holding your knees? Yoga is all about being flexible, like pilates, you need a good personal trainer to improve your muscle tone, strength and stamina. Eh mahirap kung sa pag stretch mo may pumutok na ugat? Hehehehe. Goodluck to your gym.
