Computer related injury

October 25, 07

What happens if your right arm remains the only source of earning money for a living? I mean those columnist, business writers, article writers in order to sell something out of writing within a week? How do they manage to keep up with the paper works? Imagine writing a new article every week for the same column? Imagine using your longhand to write documents the entire day? Imagine you had to check through around hundred of pages to find and replace every use of a certain word and type it in the computer? It can be very stressful, I can’t even imagine, so to speak.

The past few days, even if I find the use of a keyboard is mightier than using a pen, seems like I hardly even finish a report in a day. My kind of job is to write my daily fifteen minutes training. A kind of job only secretary do. I am not a secretary for pity-sakes. Why would I do all these? It may not be what it seems to be, it’s just that I always have the problem using the computer at work. It’s either too small or too outdated. I noticed though that everytime I’d force to stretch my arms towards my back - I always enjoy that “cracking” sound - never have I thought that I’m already suffering from a “mouse-hand” related injury. From time to time my palm starts tingling, shoulder gets a cramp and I feel like I have tennis elbow. Like right now. The 2 things I was considering were deep tissue massage but eventhough someone tried to pull my arms to stimulate my muscles, I never had success by doing these.

While at home when I was trying to use my laptop to blog, naturally, I’d use my Mighty Mouse mouse from Mac (btw, it’s a drop-dead gorgeous mouse that I have ever used), instead of its trackpad but apparently, it’s not stable. The first few months or so, the trackpad was wonderfully smooth. But ever since, it has become extremely sticky. Perhaps its just my fingers, and all the dirt, grease, etc that accompany them. But even when I wash my hands with soap, the trackpad is still sticky. Siguro, di ko lang talaga ginagamit parati - calling all the geeks to show me how to use these please.

I found that a good mouse can be one of your most usefull tools. Investing in a good mouse can mean a world of difference in your overall happiness when it comes to using your computer. But how about a right mouse pad? Probably the reason why I’m suffering from these right-hand stress is that, I’m using the right mouse without the right mouse pad.

With that in mind, I think having a nice mouse pad can also help motivate our blogging habit as well. What do you think? Do I need a massage? A nice mouse pad? A proper way of using a computer? Exercise? Do you think switching the use of the mouse to my left hand can help either?

Funny. The tingling can happen when I’m washing dishes, too. But I like typing a lot more than washing up, you know that. Besides, my right hand can be very useful more importantly on other things, too. Of course. I can’t be left-handed. I Swear, the feeling is not comfortable. Would I stop using my laptop if my legs are starting to get numbed in the next couple of hours?

Talking about sitting for hours infront of the monitor, you know how it feels like browsing to too many sites, our eyes could get strained reading off of a monitor all day. The minute you click, you’re looking at a pasty chalk template and the next, a solid black screen with red permalinks all over the page.

Such an abuse, innit?

For a minute there I thought, “makayanan kaya nya”? considering you’re a certified blog-adik anoh? Umayos ka jan. :)

Honestly, I stopped using mousepads as they have the tendency to slide and just take up space on your desk. Do those gel thingies on mousepads where you can rest your wrist on actually do any good?

sometimes I had to switch to my left hand. and feeling ko parang nadeformed na yata ang index and middle fingertips ko sa ka-katype. Don’t wanna start about my thumbs sa kakatext.
I use a piece of tile as my mousepad. haha.

Dicey, I tried those gel-silicon mousepad, it won’t help. Thing is this Mac mouse is quite sensitive but it won’t work in a clean surface, but it’s easy on the glossy pad or at least that round cork used for hot frypan is quite manageable.

Marni, a tile? di kaya magasgasan yung mouse? My left hand is obsolete, funny that I used my right hand with middle finger to tap the keys aaaall the time. No proper training for the correct typing. I used to learn that in DOS.

I’ve found that a mouse is my best friend because I’m a gamer. It’s got a nice scrolling thingo and I have a Star Wars mousepad which makes it that much awesome. As for you trackpad, how about a damp cloth? I wouldn’t know; I’ve don’t own a laptop.

Wendy, thanks for that. I tried and so far, there isn’t a problem. It’s my thumb, probably drinking too much coffee, it started to shake like I’m suffering from minor epilepsy. For games, this Mac mouse isn’t the friendliest though I’m trying to learn the use of a shortcut keys, that would be neat.

I am not actually using mouse. It’s tiring and could cause you a lot of pains. *hik*

Ambo, good for you. But I can’t, mas easier kasi using a mouse than the trackpad, although nung sa IBM ko na mouse, muntik ko ng ibato dahil ang “GULO” para syang hinahabol ng pusa.

Kenks, massage ball? Like a vibrator ba yan? Pahiram!

My keyboard is black and somewhat chunkier than my last and it’s quite difficult to wield with two hands for “proper” typing, which makes me consider the option of getting a “jelly” keyboard.

Hi K, what you have sounds like a classic case of Carpal tunnel syndrome that is caused by pressure on a nerve in the wrist. The symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain of the fingers and hands. Is it work related? It can be, but mainly it’s an overuse injuries occur when too much stress is placed on a joint or other tissue, often by overdoing an activity or repeating the same activity, and in your case, too much blogging.

In the US, if your job is using repetitive motion of your hands or fingers, then you can file it under a workman compensation claim but they might try to deny it if they know that you are a blogger and blog as much as you do. If you were to go to a doctor, they’ll give you inflammatory drug, so just take the Advil or Tylenol for pain and you might want to check out a splint to wear at night for support because later on you hand(s) might fall asleep at night as well, numb and tingling feeling, and you can find this at a medical supply store, for some that are real bad, then surgery is the last solution. I sound somewhat technical today. :)

Virgil, oh I’ve seen those jelly keyboards, it’s lightweight that can be mounted everywhere you like. It’s flexible and there are waterproofs too so you can wash it, besides our keyboards can spread diseases. So yuck, no internet cafe keyboards for me.

Ginger, I think this is just minor and I won’t be asking for a compensation because I use my laptop more than I use the office desktop. And honestly, I would never ever take a tablet. Just today, my head is breaking, I am complaining at my desk. I can’t move my fingers, it’s like I’m having this rheumatism - it’s bearable than having a massive headache anyway.

2007-10-27 02:25:17

Maybe you should check the way you use your keyboard an mouse. I’ve been using mine for hours everyday for years, and I sometimes get some pains, but mostly from sitting wrong. Right now, I’m fine. Maybe you should try a standing desk.

Range, I think I have a problem with my chair. I have an excessively wide wrist rests, it’s higher than the space bar of the keyboard, so the tendency, I would lean towards the screen for a longer time, so I think it also inhibit blood circulation on my body specially the right hand.

i think i do more typing than mousing so buti naman wala pa akong nararamdaman na aches or pains on my mouse hand. what i do have a problem with is my back and balakang. i think i sit down in front of the pc too long, kaya heto sumasakit na siya. occupational hazards. :)

K
2007-10-27 21:53:32

Occupational hazard in my department is taken really seriously. Kaso now that I have wrist problem, I don’t think bigyan ako ng compensation hahaha kasi malalaman na lagi akong nag net-babad. I can’t resist talaga to go online. I can manage to stay like 12hrs or so reading anything or watching *ahems* movies on TV.links site. At work, parang sideline ko yung magbasa ng blog. High maintenance masyado ang regular massage, wag na. Actually kapag malapit na taglamig, nararamdaman ko to. Takot ako sa ospital.

I’m so impressed by the new page and new look! I know I haven’t been by lately, but I just wanted to stop by and say hello :)

I’m still shopping around for a wireless mouse for my lappy…and I totally get you on your last statement “sitting for hours infront of the monitor, you know how it feels like browsing to too many sites, our eyes could get strained reading off of a monitor all day”. That’s me everyday!!!

happy weekend!

pero, are u sure you got that wrist numbness from blogging too much or from something else???? gets mo?

Meron kasing ball vibrator, para ma-stimulate and mga muscles…. pero teka parang sya rin yung gingamit sa… (fill in da blanks).

Don’t worry I am an adult, but no way I’ll try one. Unless, it’s the real massager.
