You know with so many things going on around with me online, I find it really amusing that I have actually signed up to too many interesting things in the internet, re: the best things in life, it seems, really are always free.

Can you remember when you open up a free account, how many times did they asked your year of birth, real names, last names, etc? It’s the ultimate challenge for lazy people like me. The internet is fast but tricky at the same time when filling up our profile online, we tend to create the same username and a passwords because these are something that we care about have already used. I often ask, why do I need another name or passwords when I am the only one benefiting these accounts?

If you want to ask a few regular techie person about what average internet users can do to ensure their security, their first answer is usually, “Oh man, why did you used that? You’re screwed.” But I suspect that’s not all true, but in reality it is simply just complicated. You’re screwed if you do nothing to protect yourself, but there are many things you can do to increase your security on the internet.

Like how?

I do not know how many free accounts I can think of, but I do know that using the same user name (except for the adult site) and passwords is a lot more easier than remembering some parts of the questions like, “what’s your favourite color”, “what’s your pet’s name” - to verify that you are the same person updating the passwords, until you sigh in relief, “ahh finally, time to hit the enter button” without even thinking if we are agreeing to their terms of service. We may seem unaware of the fact that internet afterall has all its flaws. We may never know that in the internet point of view, is not always safe to use the same easy or short passwords.

password

Ok, geddit!

So you mean the longer passwords (6 to 10 letters with combination of numbers) we use, the more we are safe? While we can’t memorize good enough passwords any more, I’m not bothered.

Do you know how many emails we made in the past? And every email we make, join online services or use an instant messengers, etc., there’s always a need to create passwords. It is not an easy thing to remember at all. If there is a software that can save the passwords in a single database please help me direct to that site so that I don’t need to remember any single one of them because I’m stucked with just one password, think of that cartoon.

Indeed, it is a dilemma of our Internet Life. And I think, the only easiest possible way to be safe in the internet is to turn our computer off when we are not using it.

I always have the same user and password, even for the adult sites, and probably it´s not secure.
by the way If there is a software that can save your favorite adult sites to share them, please help me direct to that site, and please send me your list of favs :)

i have this software in my pocket pc, codewallet pro, it stores all my passwords and other sensitive info (card number, sss, tin, etc). wrote about it here. i am not sure about a software for the desktop pc, though. i usually just keep sensitive data in an excel file then password-protect it. hehe.

oh, wait. you can try Any Password 1.44, it’s pretty basic, but does the job. ;-) thanks for the feature, btw.

Hi Ron, and that’s another thing, it’s confusing at times that even before, I used to set a password for my Nokia (maybe scared of being stolen) apparently, as we all know, when you fail to enter the password in three successive times, the simcard is locked and you are prohibited from using it. One time, I was leaving comments to a blog at ang nailagay ko sa url, eh yung password na ginagamit ko for this blog and my email accounts, so lahat ko yun pinalitan. Ang bobo, anoh? Hehehe.

Inthesity, hey I only watch cartoons and youtubes, hahaha. I swear I can’t share the site, it’s forbidden. Maybe try the program what Pao is directing us to use, I think that’s useful.

Pao, thanks for the links. I forgot tho, I am using a MacBook but now that you gave me an idea, I actually found one (just now) for Mac OS and see how it goes, I hope freeware sya. On the contrary, I was also looking for a messenger-all-in-one program for my PDA. I am now using IM Plus for Pocket PC, kaso trial version and still thinking if I’d purchase it or not. Any idea?

Like pao, I’m also using the codewallet because my longterm memory is not long enough. ;)

That’s funny password K, you need to add some numbers to make it longer.lol. I usually use 4 passwords, and many times if I only visit that site once a year because I have to buy a book or what ever, then I’d let them e-mail me the password, but then I’ve like 5 email address, it’s somewhat of a problem of remembering which one I use for what. :)

Diane, I’m sorry if I made you laugh, but truly having a “long” one always doesn’t seem to have a physiological effect on someone’s sexual satisfaction. But whether they are true or not, I think that width is more important than length, right? Afterall, size does (sometimes) matter. Hahaha.

Dicey, if that’s free I will try that on my PDA Samsung phone - sounds like every PDA-ers uses this. Do you use Blackberry?

Ginger, I uses six, ok 4 sometimes but a friend said that four numbers/letters is considered badluck (as in death?) so I avoid having fours. I have 4 email addresses, so I think “I’m DEAD” - well only 2 of them are considered active.

I use a program called KeePass. It’s a databases which keeps all your passwords, and creates passwords for you too, consisting of random numbers, letters and anything else you want added. You save your database in whatever directory you want, and if you need to clean up your comp, it’s as easy as saving the database on a blank CD.

Okay, I’m afraid I’m of them people who has the same username and same passwords for almost anything and everything. I’ve about 3 combinations and that’s it. Now that’s stupid…hehehe~

I have a different password for each of my usernames. I have my own quirky way of remembering my passwords so I don’t have to write them down or anything. My problem is with my username. Some sites allow dashes, some don’t so I have to modify. I have a couple of usernames all over the net that I tend to forget them. And once you forget a username, patay na. They can email you your password if you forget, but they can’t do anything if you forget your username. :(

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Sep 20, 2007

Thanks Wendy, the program looks easy to use. I wonder if it works for Mac as well? There are many free program out there but I just can’t decide which one works flawlessly.

Kofi, actually a friend told me yesterday that, she too uses the same passwords. She even shared them to me. Like wait a minute *hides away the screen*, I am not looking. And she combine passwords with her husband and kids names. Just bizarre!

Marni said: They can email you your password if you forget, but they can’t do anything if you forget your username. This exactly is my own agony, it’s insane, I tell you.

i use a simple password and then a more secure password. sa username din ako nalilito hehe. the internet is supposed to make our lives easier, pero how come everything is getting more complicated? hehe.

Wavatar pao» added these pithy words on: Sep 20, 2007

ah, so you’re a pocket pc user too, huh? :) yeah, i would recommend IM+, that’s what i’m using now. honestly, though, i like agile messenger more. it supports file transfer and i think video chats. :)

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: Sep 20, 2007

Meeya, true, easier the better. Well I try to change/renew my password every once a month but I don’t know it took me awhile to find that “password change” option on my msn account. I mean you’re right, sabi nga ng isang costumer, “I came here to enjoy the movie, not to listen to some annoying mobile phones and people eating like pigs with their popcorns”.

Pao, yes I’m talking about this one. See, I’m pretending to look like a geek trying so hard to learn the use of a stylus. Minsan, annoying din pero, it looks more professional. Gulp!

btw, di na free ang Agile messenger. Panis.

what a coincidence you having this post. I just forgot my user name and password in one of the websites I go to. I had to wrack my brains out to remember what it was. Haaaay!

Wavatar the techie missus» added these pithy words on: Sep 20, 2007

yeah, hindi na free. sayang nga eh. pero mas gusto ko IM+ kasi hindi bumabagal phone ko kahit matagal kong gamitin.
