Another tag from Belle. Aba, mabenta ata ako? Yes, 10 random facts about my mother, Kathleen. I visited her back in the Philippines a couple of months ago.
Upon my arrival, she was not there but few minutes later, she arrived carrying a dozen of sampaguita flowers and hugged me for reals like as if I was her only child. I said, “what is this sampaguita flowers all about?” She then replied, “this is not for you, this is for the Sto.Nino, thanking him for your safe journey”. I said, “Oh Mother…. such a drama”.
1. So my Mother is a drama actress, not on screen but in real life. She talks a lot, she nags, she cries and laugh like a teenager. She’s 65.
2. She loves wearing shorts, as in shorty-short jeans, a Mango sando-like t-shirt (her picture above), and pairs them off with the Rockport sandals. Of course it was my pasalubong.
3. She doesn’t like wearing make-up, except for an eye-liner, kailangan naka Nike-style ang kilay. She would always keep a pencil in her coin purse. Now that reminds me when she called asking me to buy her a MAC pencil. Aba, sosyal.
4. She nags about my habit spending, reminding me to save for my future. I said what future? Then we start the never ending arguments (reminders, I suppose) that I am not getting any younger, that I am still single, that I… I.. “next time, buy me more shorts”, she said. Aba, pasaway.
5. She’s a funny woman. She would change her clothes infront of us and my sisters would scream like, “Mother! Not a good sight to see”. She distressed, “I fed all of you with these saggy boobs”. We didn’t grow in bottles. So probably she was too proud about breastfeeding. No belly scratches, flawless skin. Only now that her bil-bil is bigger than her boobs. In other words, she’s a ‘cowboy’.
6. She cooks food without a recipe. I don’t know why Mothers would always cook the BEST kind of food in the kitchen, lasang lutong bahay.
7. She’s a dancer. When I was younger, she would bring me to any Fiestas and asked me to dance with her, like opening the dancefloor for everybody. I swear, people would say, the dancing duo. I was 10. Aba, nakakahiya.
8. She was the labandera in her family. She didn’t finished High School because she was also the “Mother” of the other siblings in the family until all of them finished in college. She and Dad were schoolmates and ‘escaped’ the provincial life to get married somewhere in Sampaloc. Aba nakipag-tanan?
9. She’d always reminds us to work harder, as she did when we were just small – follow our dreams, stay level-headed and ‘never forget those who helped us’. Typical, Mother who would say, “family who prays together, sticks together”. She was devastated like most of us, when our Dad passed away. She went thru difficult times, she had her surgery after a few years and now she can’t do all the house work. At least, 1 litre of coke can make her smile. Aba, Coca-holic din like me.
10. She hates goodbyes, she never like to see someone go even just for the time being. She’d cry in silence everytime I would set myself in to the Airport. Then she would hug me and reminds me of the things like, “watch your health, stop smoking, stop spending but never stop praying”. Wait. “don’t forget to buy me some more shorts”. Aba, may pahabol pa.
Oh Mothers, you know. Ayan, si Kathleen. – so proud of her. Like what Dianne Reeves used to say on her song, “What she told me. Would mould me and hold me together inside.” So, check on my other entries about Kathleen:

Thank you, Kathleen

like what I’ve said before, your mother is cool! I see mums in a different light now that I am a mum myself- mas lumaki respeto ko sa mga nanay!!!

I miss my mom, thanks for sharing about yours. Your mom seems so cool, not your typical mom, and she’s got style of her own, the short-short part I can’t get over. Lol.

Duke, our youngest said the same thing to herself. Thank you for the thoughts, I too, think that she’s one of the coolest mom. Aba, nangarap.
Ginger, I couldn’t think of someone to tag along with this, so why not share something about your mom too? Most of us have nice stories to tell and I’m sure you’re also proud of her. Oh yeah, that short-short story, I think she’s size 34 and couldn’t decide which to buy, the mens size or the woman’s size. Funny thing, in HK most women wear small sizes so I had no choice but to buy from the mens. She didn’t mind.

thanks K for doing the tag. i had fun reading it, kinkoy ka talaga. i like your sense of humor. i was laughing hard, really hard. my husband had to ask what was so funny about, so i stopped reading and i explained.
she is a funny! you know, once in a while, i change clothes in front of the children, too because they are always in my room kasi, and both of them will say, ehew!! and run away..ha! ha! good way of getting rid of them out of my room. but mine are all girls so hindi gaano diyahe.
she is funky mom, who has a style. i love mom who wear shorts and tank tops or sando. she is great, an incredible mom. hope to meet her in the province now that i know how she looks like.
honestly, she looks great at 65. She has nice tan and smooth skin. No signs of wrinkles. And I can see your resemblances in her. ahh, i can say more but i am pressed for time. please tell her that i adore her and i hope to meet her someday.

Hahaha Belle, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make you laugh. Ang dami pa about Kathleen, and she would be so delighted if you meet her in person (but never mention na I make chismis about her online, hahaha). I think her batchmate from HS is a regular of Catanduanes.net, I forgot his name. She mentioned, binigyan daw sya ng kaunting pera nung nasa Manila pa sya during her surgery.
Totoo, she’s a funky mom – everytime she tries to reach me via chat she would call it, “pinahihirapan ang sarili” namin dahil minsan nawawala bigla ang connection and she would say, “GASTOS NA DAING CAMOGTACAN” – just an expression.
And uunga, thank you for reminding, nagpapabili pala sya ng “BIGEN” coloring hair – ayaw syang tawaging “LOLA” dahil ang kanyang pambato ang kutis nya, na ni minsan di daw sya nag ka pimples during her youth. Tiga-laba sya dati (and she’s so proud of that) nina Alberto family mellinium years ago. Kalaro nila dati sina Dindo Fernando (didn’t you know mga cousin nila yun?) and we actually rented their old house in Virac before. O, aliw diba?

Thanks K for the tag, this is all new to me, but I’ll see what I can come up with. I also wear a small, so can’t help you in that department and also don’t wear short-short, don’t like it when men look at my legs.lol, apparently your mom doesn’t mind, and that’s what she gets for asking her son to buy her clothes, especially short-short pants. :D

K, i will echo what most everyone has said: you’re mom is so cool! she’s different in a sense na she has a kikay sense of style, but she’s a mom through and through because she never fails to remind her children to always be good and take care. it think the reason why she looks young for her age is because she seems like a very happy person. if i were you, i would get her all the shorts in tsim sha tsui, admiralty, and tai koo shing that i can get my hands on! plus a MAC liner, too. :)

Ginger, I read about your Mom’s, you did great and I’m sorry to hear for the loss. I’m sure shes out there smiling in the heaven’s above. When I was younger, I’m afraid of dying but well it is part of life that is completely unavoidable. Althought I don’t want to die prematurely, but isn’t it exciting to meet our maker and all the people that have died before us that we”ve loved?
Meeya, she has lived here many years and she knows exactly where to buy those, eh yun pa mahilig din sa mall (sya pa ang nag i-initiate kung saan mura) – she’s not exactly into the brands but she thinks, why not?

Panissssssss you’re so hilarious!I can almost guess kung saan ka nagmana! I like your mom a lot! She’s somewhat similar to my mother kaaliw!
I know you have read my latest entry dear. This is just a confirmation of your assignment. I hope you’ll join us:)

it would have been lovely to meet her. sa kanya ka pala nag mana. please tell her saludo ako sa kanya for being totoo!

Cheh, actually, lahat ata kami nag-mana sa tatay namin, that’s what she said, pero socially, kuha namin sa kanya yung palatawa parati. She’s like a friend to us pero ang sakit kumurot nyan (nung bata pa kami) kung pasaway ka.
Thanks for the tag, I’m still re-thinking – I need to read the instructions again, di ko kasi nakuha agad.

Sha, mmm 65 yes she is. Her secret is Oil of Olay. Hahaha not really but I saw her using a set of those when she used to live here in HK. Seriously tho, wala naman. One night, nag experiment sya, bumili ng freshmilk at ginawang facial wash. Then she realized, di na pala kailangan kapag umabot ka na ng 50 plus.
Cheh, nagawa ko na ang MEE MEE. Ate ang hirap kaya? (in-Ate tuloy).
Bicolano baga.
