it’s all about the taxis, billboards, sidewalks, cinemas, zebra lines, lights, sounds, people, skyscrapers and shopping malls.

What the F-O-O-K is going on with Hong Kong officials these days? After Smoking was banned in all restaurants earlier this year, there’s a new controversial proposal that has raised many eyebrows.

It was earlier announced that people who are caught using foul language on trains could be jailed for six months including a penalty of HK$5000.00.

Are you fooking kidding me?

Other important changes in the by- laws include a maximum fine of HK$2,000 for queue jumping; HK$5,000 fine and six months’ imprisonment for unauthorized structures; HK$5,000 fine for the wrong use of ticket-vending machines; HK$5,000 fine for failure to obey directions inside a train carriage; HK$5,000 fine (formerly HK$2,000) for placing feet on seats; HK$5,000 fine and six months’ imprisonment for causing a fire hazard; HK$5,000 (HK$2,000) fine for playing a musical instrument or radio or cassette recorder; HK$5,000 (HK$2,000) for taking on board prohibited items; HK$5,000 (HK$2,000) for entering or exiting by improper means; HK$5,000 (HK$2,000) and six months’ jail for soliciting, and soliciting for handling goods or luggage; HK$5,000 (HK$2,000) and three months’ jail for displaying unauthorized materials or loitering; and HK$5,000 (HK$3,000) and six months’ (three months) jail for flying objects endangering operations. - The Standard

Do these proposals applies only for Hong Kong people? Does the Government really have to educate the community about the purpose of this new proposal? Perhaps in the next few months, the MTR will promote a slogan that says: “WEAR YOUR MASK WHILE USING THE TRAIN”.

“It looks like we’ll have to pay as much attention to these by-laws as we would when preparing a racing car for fear it will crash and cause many casualties,” Chan said. “It would be better to delay the process by three to four months to ensure we have something that is more reasonable.”

Well I’m sure it’s already making people sick. C’mon, don’t make this city another Singapore. And for pity’s sake, don’t sanitize our mouth.

That’s a very funny law, my suggestion, if you have the itch, use your native language…if they don’t understand you, you didn’t break the law. ;)

my gosh, those are harsh penalties. what if you are newcomer and of course being a newcommer, you make mistake. will these laws apply to them, too? in that case, they need to orient these newcomers to their prevailing rules and regulations before they can go in public places on their own.

Nye, that’s a good idea. But the thing is, I really never swear in public. I don’t even have the guts to even say infront of someone if I were in a bad argument. I say these “F” words all the time in this blog because I considered them a silly “expression”, like OMG, Shoot! Dang! Whoops!. :)
Belle, isn’t that absurd? But I would say yes to the ‘queue jumping’ penalty. There are people here who pushes you from the back. The MTR cars can get very crowded at busy times (anytime of the day or night) and people do tend to push and jostle a bit. There were several deaths reported being hit by the train by pushing the person off the tracks. There are now hired “people-pushers” during rush times to aid in this and even installed a glass barriers in some busy stations. The one I hate about people taking these trains is that they don’t have manners. If you are leaving the train, people don’t wait before (they even block and wait infront of the door) you get off. But the MTR is the most convenient source of transport for both locals and tourists to find a place for shopping.

That is too much! Are they running out of means to earn money? Baka mamya bawal na rin huminga ha ha ha!

That is really fucked up law but I like the banning of smoking in restaurants since it is like here in Norway but not just restaurants but indoors of public places. You can only smoke outside.

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: May 27, 2007

Masel, ‘nabi mo pa. I would suggest the “bawal huminga” na rin. Diba kahit puno na, nagpipilit pa rin silang pumasok so imagine if you are standing infront of a stinky person talking so loud on the phone, mamatay ka sa hininga at amoy ng kili-kili nila. Hahaha, ang sama!

Charles, I thought it was a great idea, the purpose was to promote a “Smoking-Free City”. Instead, there are actually more & more people smoking and polluting the air outside. You’ll even see cig-butts anywhere near the trashbins (trashbins was replaced without the cigarette trays).

Wavatar duke» added these pithy words on: May 27, 2007

seriously! they are implementing all those rules??? whoa! and I actually liked riding the MTR because it was very fast and efficient even though it gets smelly and crowded during rush hours!

Wavatar K» added these pithy words on: May 27, 2007

Panjeet, I’m afraid the Akismet swallowed your comments and I accidentally deleted the 200 Spam comments I received today and yours was included I suppose. Baka naman the content of your comments has foul language? Hahahaa, sorry for that po.

Duke, I’d like to think the same as what Masel has said, they’re ‘running out of means to earn money’. I would like to see those people given a fine of refusing to give up a seat on the eldery, pregnant, or those with small children. The most skilled person who do it are those who just pretend to be asleep to avoid the guilt. Hahaha.

Wavatar bluepanjeet» added these pithy words on: May 27, 2007

wow 200 spam today? that must be a pain in the neck if WP has no akismet?

Hmm, you’re a smoker K? I’m not so I do actually support the smoking ban in HK. The foul language ban is weird. What if you curse in English or French? Man, the government is getting rich. I think I count all the P.K. and DLM phrases I hear today.

Wavatar Wengistein» added these pithy words on: May 27, 2007

You know, that’s the kind of law we need in Australia, and it should apply to teenagers who don’t understand the concept of some dignity. Though how do they report the said person who swore?

Wavatar Jaypee» added these pithy words on: May 27, 2007

That’s the first time I heard about a law of that type. I can see what the HK government is trying to do but this is still silly. Those fines are so stiff and costly. I’m not familiar with how the law works in HK but if this proposal is accepted and made into a law, I’m sure a lot of people would get caught and fined.
