If you’re visiting Hong Kong and you happened to be staying near Kimberely Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, don’t forget to visit the Knutsford Terrace because it’s definitely an ‘in’ place for visitors who enjoys fine dining Italian, a Japanese, a Steak House, a Russian restaurant with an unusual vodka freezer and other bars and restaurants. It’s a small place with bars and restaurant which is totally an al fresco dining. Although this place is slightly claustrophobic due to the narrowness of the terrace and by the fact it is mostly what Hong Kong is, I guarantee that you will love it there. The place is normally busy daily and like anywhere, even more so at weekends.
Last night was no exemption, an old friend visiting Hong Kong who used to live here invited me for dinner at Merhaba restaurant and bar, it’s a modern style Turkish restaurant which managed to accomodate costumers a whole-feel of Turkey. It was my first time to eat in a Turkish restaurant so apparenty, I had no idea of the food they serves, except that when you say Mediterranean, a lamb is suggestively appropriate. So I got the grilled lamb cuts with string beans and a tiny scoop of rice on the side. But of course, we couldn’t resist the simple vegetable salad with apple slices - don’t know what its called but the dressing seemed to be a yoghurt. How appetizing.
Also, I’ve seen few people enjoying this tall can-glass looking pipes which they used to smoke like a cigarette without seeing a smoke. I thought these young chinese women was just playing around with it. I couldn’t take away my eyes glancing at them, so out of curiosity, I asked the waiter what it was, he said, they are popular for young people as the name suggest, it’s called a flavoured Hubbly Bubbly. It’s a traditional glass-pipe devised used for smoking tobacco. I wondered if they are even safe or clean for that matter as these women was sipping like you think they’ll get choked as they laughed after passing it on to her companion. It really look amazing - and weird at the same time!
Other than that, I enjoyed everything with the ambience, it looks like a very comfortable escape from a typical evening out. Momentarily, a Turkish music was played and suddenly a girl who looked like the Filipina actress, Carmi Martin popped out in the scene where she belly danced infront of us. Her costume was so revealing even more when she danced like - oh wait, is that a hula? She can’t dance like the real Turkish so it was a little distracting. If only she’s not beautiful I would literally call the Manager to have her arrested or something. And oh, the food was great. So I highly recommend this place if you come visit me here.
And speaking of Alternatives, my iPod shuffle is loaded with these personal choices of music that I highly recommended FREE to download. If you like them, grab it. I’ve heard that somewhere in the Middle East area, they have these “cigarettes” that are flavoured and apparently don’t harm the body, though they do have niccotine so they are addictive.
Weng, I had no idea really but I’m sure they are still considered as a cigaretete. Similarly, I read an article that the impact of these pipe smoking is equivalent in magnitude to that of cigarette smoking. So isn’t that uncool?
Yes the Turkish make a lot of yogourt dressings, and they use also a lot of cucumber.
You should have looked for some turkish pop music, there are some good bands and solo singers, try http://www.sezen-aksu.com/ she was the biggest diva wen I went to Turkey a lot of years ago (how many is a secret) and she still is.
I also recomend Istambul is one of the most amazing cities in the world. An interesting mix of ancient and modern, a lot of new disigners, night spots, music, etc…
The salad was nice actually. And oh, I love Kebab sandwiches. Istanbul that is, must be the most exciting place to visit. I would definately come back to that restaurant again.
