Reports said that the trips of ferry boats to Catanduanes Island are now back to normal effective today and the road from Legazpi to Tabaco is now passable, albeit one way only. This paved the way for the coming in of goods trapped in the mainland Bicol which will augment the existing stocks and replenish the depleted ones. According to the First Catanduanes Electric Cooperative, Inc. (FICELCO), it would take at least two weeks to restore distribution lines to the Virac poblacion. A source said materials required for the rehabilitation project would cost at least P45 million. The situation could be further complicated by the National Power Corporation’s admission that its diesel generating plants have been water-damaged and that a damaged substation transformer would have to be replaced.

When typhoon Sening ravaged our island 36 years ago, the national government as well as Catandunganons residing elsewhere could only wonder if we were badly hit. We did not have the advantage of modern communications then, only radios that belonged to the Constabulary. When Sening struck, we were left senseless, saved only by the arrival of US Navy helicopters and ships from Subic. *source Catanduanes Tribune.

As of this late, my sister called me via cellphone and I was relieved that they are all OKAY. The communication is now back to normal. There were no major damaged in our house except for some wet clothes & other small things. She mentioned that the typhoon was really scary and the sea waves reached the streets. If it happened at night, it would have been more terrible. Candles and batteries were already out of stock, banking transactions are still offline at this time. Pero at least okay naman sila lahat.

My sincerest THANKS to all of you for including me and my lovedones in your prayers. God is truly Merciful. And today, we are celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

hi Manny, it’s indeed a great news. I could listen to their stories all day and I felt much relieved despite the terrible experienced they had, at the same time, felt guilty I was not able to help them in times of crisis like this. I’m so thankful to Him up there for giving us the strength and guidance and for people like you, who in one way or another shared their prayers.

Thanks Vince. Honestly, we always struggle everytime a typhoon would hit us. Times like these, it reminded me of the time when me and brothers would climb on the roof to check everything before the storm. It’s very traumatic.

It is nice to hear that your folks are okay. I heard about the typhoon from here. Anyway, we are having bad weather as well for almost 3 months now. No snow and such. Hate it.

Charles, it’s never the same like that in our province where we are visited 20 times a year. We are always prepared, ignore the signals because we get used to it. Although it’s not always fun to say “no classes” when there’s a typhoon, for us it’s all the preparation. For some reason, it wasn’t expected to be as BIG and strong like that, for the first time everyone back there was SHOCKED.

Thanks for the thoughts J, if you visit my place, it calms during the summer months, the most visited place for surfers. It’s a little “Hawaii” island, fresh air and the lovely people. It’s just that sometimes, Mother Nature is really “inconsistent”, it may hit big as signal #3 but for us it’s nothing than just normal rainfall. But this time, I don’t think the people there (and my family) didn’t prepare, just that it was unexpected.

wow, that’s relieving that your family is okay. i can’t imagine being far away from home when a disaster strikes, but you’re lucky that everything is fine now. my thoughts and prayers extend your way. i think it’s things like this that make us cherish what we have more so at the least we have that to be thankful for. :D

Grace, I’ve read the news. It was signal #1 when I called the other day, just rain but still they were terrified and mad (eh ano pa nga ba ang gagawin) eh wala ka talagang magagawa. I heard there’s few more typhoons coming to the Philippines before the end of this month. I can’t wait to go home, pero they told me not to worry so they said, sa summer na lang daw ako umuwi.

Hi Pablo, if the rest of the world knew that we actually have more horrible weather than other places in Asia visited by typhoons, everyone would visit there. When it rains, it only mists, and when it’s sunny it’s one of the most beautiful places in the country. If you like to waterski, hike, bike, run - it’s the place. I’m still thankful that despite of, we still enjoy the normalness of life there. In HK, you will experience a big typhoon that goes to signal #10 and it’s not threatening at all.

you must have been pretty worried, yan ang mahirap when you live far from your love ones..

glad to know your family is fine.i didn’t know we have another typhoon there, prone talaga ang pilipinas, japan is earthquake prone naman.

Thank God your family is alright. Merry Christmas!

Ate Sach - uunga eh. Mas nakakatakot naman yun since we live in the islands, a big earthquake (caused normally by Mayon’s prior erruption) eh di mo alam kung mag ta-tidal wave afterwards. I was 10 that time and I thought it was FUN to watch the waves that reached the streets, eh yun pala talagang nakakatakot eh ma-wash out na lang ang buong island, di mo alam. Buti na lang it happened during daylight, kung hindi it would be terrible. Ingats palagi diyan, di natin alam kung kelan darating, kaya we should cherish each day habang andito pa tayo diba?

Range, my 4th Christmas without the whole family. When we get older, it’s not easy to be together during this season. But I know we are closer inside our hearts, at least the thoughts are there. Thanks.

    god bless and congrats.

My sister lives there, kahit nga daw maulan lang, she hates baha at mag commute going to work. Ang hirap talagang maging mahirap pero life is good, no matter what, diba?

Ate Beng, THANK YOU for the prize, I’ve already made my latest entry about your Pakuwela game. Bait mo! Merry Xmas.

This will be one of my first Christmases without anyone in my family. I’ve just moved to Taiwan with my wife. At least I have my wife. And we will be both working on Christmas.

But instead on focusing on the negative, focus on the positive, like the fact your family is OK.

Thank your for enlightening me. I’m actually feeling half-sad and half-great. Sad because as much as I’d like to spend my Xmas “physically” with them (I really miss it back home), I still have to work during the holidays so I’ll be stucked at work during Xmas eve. I feel great at the same time because first and foremost, they are fine and two my elder brothers and their family will be spending Xmas with me here in HK.

i know this is a tad late but I’m glad things are picking up again in Catanduanes. I’m am really glad your family is ok.

  20. Wavatar K on 16.12.2006 at 02:55 Post reply

Most of my family was prepared but they didn’t expect the typhoon was really strong, talagang lahat ng tao dun naapektuhan, maraming namatay (God Bless all of them) pero sa awa, ok naman sila. The town would take a few more months before everyone can recover including us. I’m glad the Governor of the Island did something extraordinary in restoring all the ferries to and from. Communication was restored a week later, pero wala pa ring kuryente, some are using “generators” to put the business back - buti na lang sanay ang mga tao sa amin kahit wala nun. God is merciful.
