Just grab the freaking chocolate bars and stay away from my wallet

I was with my brothers and dear pamangkins (niece) exchanging childish laughs when the elder one suddenly asked: “when you were a kid like us, what was the first gift you asked grandma/grandpa”? I replied, “I was in my High School when I asked for a pair of Reebok shoes”. He smiled back whispering, “that’s why I was mad when people stepped on my Nike because they are new and Mom gave them to me on my birthday”. I looked at him and asked to show me his pair of shoes and stepped on it and said, “there, now I baptised the shoes”! Just because he owned something new. He was mad and went crazy about it.

Really, kids these days are so conscious now when it comes to choosing on things they like or what their parents gave them. It usually comes with a little child-drama like crying, feeling of tampo, if they can’t get what they want, doesn’t matter how much the price. I was a bit anxious and started to imagine that we really live in a material world. It is made up with everything we see, handle or use. If we think of shoes, the one that come first in our mind is Nike. If we think of food, we usually end up sitting at McDonalds. If we look for some jeans, we choose Levi’s. I know most of you thought so, too. Admit it.

But maybe these are just one of the few things we find no difficulties in deciding what we want. We are influenced mostly by consumer goods. Don’t we all? Literally, brands really creates an identity. We have made the material world the map of value. The fact is, we want it this way, demand it, and the significance of it is that we are simply attached to all these possessions, makes us far more than simply materialistic.

As I entered the 7-11 store looking for something to drink, my nephew suggested that a Hi-C drinks are good for health and that I must stop smoking. Pakialamerong bata. I was shocked of course and smiled back saying, “just grab that freaking chocolate bars and stay away from my wallet”. You see, even if I’m broke, I still had to buy that chocolate bars just to please the poor child. Panis!

Now I realised why sometimes whenever I go out, I’d like to wear something to be seen because I simply want the world to know that it is an Armani shirt I’m wearing - because my identity lies in the image that goes with it. Ang yabang!

btw: Godiva (on the photo) is one my favourite chocolate biscuits. Now you know why I like brands.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Well yes, you could tell everyone your wardrobe is worth over $AU5000 or something, but I’m a cheapo, and I just look for what I like and if it’s on a discount, it’s a bonus!

I like Twix bars. :D

If I think about shoes Prada is the nÂş1 in my head, if I think about food, my moom or traditional Spanish or Italian food is my first option, Jean? I’m wering gas right now, and chocolate? any,but lately I prefer black chocolate, whith 70% cacao or more. And of course I love designers clothes but like Wengistein I prefer discounts I never pay the oficial price…..I don’t enjoy being broke.

sorry, jeans instead of jean and wearing instead of…mom instead of moom, and probably there are many more, I need an English class

Well I am also brand concious but suddenly I came into some sort of realisation when I watched Style for Less. Because it is you that is carrying the clothes not the other way around. Besides if you have a fabulous taste, a cheap thing can look like a million bucks!

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Wengistein, everything sweets, I won’t complain. Mars bar was my first chocolate that I really really love when I first came here in HK.

inthesity, I swear when you’re broke, it feels like the world is 3 times heavier. But it’s more heavier when you have loads of plastic and you pay the bank back 3 times higher as well. So cruel eh?

Charles, sometimes I would prefer the quality vs the quantity. I have bought pairs of Giordano underwears and I thought ok, they are cheap for a dozen but compared to the CK’s or HUGO’s, after few laundry washes, the GIO’s can easily rolled few inches above my knees whenever I pulled my pants off in our locker. Hahaha.

it’s ok to like nice stuff.
but we just need to remember the important things in life too…

Vina, hahahaha. NO. I stopped, smoking again. I stopped and then again I smoke, like once in a while now. Slowly getting there but no worries comes January next year, I will be Zero nicotine. Kaya?

Neko, in a very sense yes that’s true. But then again, as the world becomes so virtual and digital, we spend proportionately less on basic necessities and more on things based upon our emotion and desire. And we feel satisfied, partially because of these. I hope I’m wrong.

First of all, I like your header design. In the spirit of Christmas, santa claus is coming to town!

It’s quite easy nowadays to find instant gratification on material things. They give you that certain “high” feeling. No wonder people call shopping now as “retail therapy”.

Don’t you think Madonna said it all right in her song ” ‘coz we are living in a Material World…”

I go to the family mart and get some Kinder chocolates. Haven’t seen any Cadbury’s yet.

insightful post, k! i sometimes see myself in kids - stomping my foot on the inside whenever i don’t get what i want. but the truth is, given our standing before God, we don’t deserve anything. when this thought hits me, i realize that whatever i have is a gift from Him and it then becomes easier for me to be grateful. happy thanksgiving!

Duke, the weather proves that kahit walang snow dito sa HK, it’s the month of “gift-giving”. Gifts is no longer a noun - it’s a verb, Gifting. It’s a routine na ata that occurs throughout the year for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, housewarmings and holiday occasions, such as Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day, Easter. Christmas in HK may not be as good as how we celebrate them in Pinas pero I still prefer a beautiful Christmas, for me it’s the “Thanksgiving” matters the most. Miss ko mga pagkain sa atin. Pero tama si Madonna.

Range, KINDER.. is that the egg-shape chocolate and when you open it, there’s a tiny toy inside? I’m not certain.

Hi there Polaris, yes our parents taught that when we were kids and Thanksgiving gave me all this realization to Thank God. That’s what it is all about and haas always been about. It’s not about the turkey, squash or sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie. It’s about celebrating all that God has done for us. Right? Thanks again for the visit.

I’m a cheapskate and only go for things that i can afford.. bleah!

I stick to my brand - Cadburys way to go…

Hmmm, talking about chocolate reminds me of your toothache.. the one on ferrero rocher? Haha… Have a happy week ahead K.

i used to worry about brands. then i found out that my identity can still be met (and more often times more so) by unbranded, unique clothing. mostly fueled by the joys of discoveries in Divisoria and Ukay.

i love that no one would be able to find what i’m wearing. hehe.

Hehehehe JC, masyadong mayabang ba ang dating? Idiomatic lang yun. It doesn’t mean I have all the luxuries to tell the people what I owned. My priorities is to save & help my family out. But even if you have the luxury, end of the day you’ll ask, “I’ve bought everything I could ever need and want, now what?” Panis diba? Hindi kita na miss kasi di mo ako na treat sa McDo. hahaha.

Asha, you still remember? That freaking ferrero murdered my tooth. Anything sweet, pass them on to me.

Dez, HAHAHAHAHAHA yan na naman ang UKAY. Naalala ko older sister ko mahilig sa MAC make up brand, tanong ko, “makikita ba sa mukha kung anong brand ang gamit mo”? Sabi nya, “depende kung marunong kang tumingin”. Malay.
