My favourite Filipino food after babysitting

I understand when parents who have never left their child before, except maybe with relatives, they are sometimes really panicky. They are worried that their baby will cry all the time, or will be scared.

I did my babysitting yesterday, my part time job (hah, just kidding), with two of my Brother’s kids, not that they would be left crying or be in trouble for the entire evening, it’s just that they might not be doing their school homeworks but playing computer games if no adult is in the house. I’m sure they know if their parents would go away, they then come back. It’s really important that I’m there to watch and they follow my orders (they should or I will be being bossy or critical in a way). I had my laptop with me so I could, at the same time, put all the programs back. Hopefully I finished half of them and luckily, they are back running & going again. No more tears!

Their mother went to the Airport to pick up someone and collect a Filipino tradition, “pasalubong” from Pinas. As you may have figured, a Pasalubong is a gift given when you’ve come back from a trip. This is a HUGE thing in Filipino culture. Not that I mean, if you don’t give the right thing you will be offended, or that it has any other meaning to the person you’re giving it into. If you go to any party, a pasalubong would always be asked for, diba? I don’t know if that’s still the “tradition” but when we were just a kid, we would asked our parents to bring us food or clothing. It is something that most of us Filipino would typically do. Eventually, I would usually have a trip to the mall, buy anything, doesn’t have to be big and it will be very much appreciated when you come back. Nowadays, my family back home doesn’t expect anything from me if ever I’d return home on a big holiday expect when it’s during Christmas. And speaking of Christmas, Aunts and Uncles are the ones who really think a “pasalubong” is a must, diba? Panis. Time flies, our outlook change so simply being with them is what really important.

So of course, I got my share for helping them in a little while. I went home with a paper bag of Longanisa & itlog na pula - an award. It’s been a while - I hadn’t eaten these typical Filipino food that can easily prepared in 10 minutes. This is a popular Filipino breakfast fare and for many, also a side dish for a meal. The usual preparation is to cut the eggs into slices and mix it with sliced tomatoes. Since I didn’t have tomatoes, I still thought it’s still best with longanisa & full of rice. Burp.

Sometimes it’s sad when you’re living all alone by yourself, there’s always the choice to eat outside than really going to the market and cook for a simple meal. But never fear, I know when and how to open my fridge and start my cooking from chicken adobo to sinigang na hipon. I still have the skills. And no, I’m not asking you to come over in my flat because I have no dining table.

In the states it’s often expected than when you travel you either send postcards or buy souvenirs for close, loved ones when you return. And if you have party, the hosting party is supposed to also give little party packages away. And whenever school has fundraser, the kids who buy their own treats are expected to share the product with everyone. My parents do not like all this giving, they are from poor backgrounds where you couldn’t afford so much. I like to give gifts for my friends and family.

My ex was Australian/Filipina - I learned the pasalubong tradition when visiting her family in the Phillipines. I discovered chocolate was always a welcome gift! And now you’ve reminded me of longanisa, adobo and sinigang which I haven’t had for a while. Now I’m hungry!

Hi there Mr Angry, you’re right, pinoys love chocolates as their choice for “pasalubong”. So how’d you like the filipino foods so far? Ever tried the “balut” (a fertilized duck egg) yet?

J - it’s actually a breakfast kind of food. As Rho would put it, a fried rice is the best choice for “longanisa”. I don’t know if you’ll ever be content with the plain garlic fried rice, this is not a chinese style but I wish I can describe the aroma if you cook sinangag with garlic, you just have to try it yourself to experience the whole thing. Ask Rho to cook one of these for you, I’m sure she’ll be oblige, hehehe.

Hahaha dez, uunga kapag my longanisa, dapat meron ding tocino, diba? Now I can order these breakfast meat at Jollibee HK. I just found that out this morning, kaso ang liit nung sunny side up nila nag moccang white tits looking na lang. Oppsss.

And K, it’s really alright if there’s no dining table.. I like having my food while on the couch.. hehe.. so.. mind if I.. :P

Hahaha Asha, I won’t mind either. You can come over but bring something like the “chicken curry in green sauce”? I don’t know what it’s called but it’s one of the best indian curry I ever tasted.

A chorizo is so Italian to me ha? Hong Kong has its kind too, I usually buy it fried from the street hawkers who cook fish balls, squid in stick - not healthy (and not clean I guess) but tastes good. I’m a fan of the Italian salami.
