Using text messages to quit smoking

CupThe past months even before I accidentally dropped my N70 while washing my coffee cups, I have not received any text messages from those special people who regularly sends nice SMS to me. When I say special people, I excluded my family members because they only sends text messages whenever I missed my monthly remittance or when my sister asked for a pre-load card on her cellphone. However, I was amused upon learning that using text messages can help me quit from smoking - probably one of a strangest cure but yet the news says it’s totally effective.

How true? Since I am still smoking, yes you hear me, I might as well try if this thing really works for me. If anytime I want a Marlboro, I’d probably just grab my Samsung and quit smoking. How would I do that?

According to some researchers at the University of Auckland, in New Zealand, text messages do actually help young people quit smoking. They discovered that those who received daily text messages containing tips on beating the cravings plus motivational words from other quitters were twice as likely to kick ash as the people who went textless. As we all know that many people tend to carry their phones with them all the times, so it’s readily accessible means of providing assistance.

How does it work? I need to have someone motivating me to stop quitting. Like sending a message to me on a daily basis, either way, including words of encouragement and reminders about why I’m quitting. Some of you had actually reminded me all that in your comments, asking me “How’s your quitting”? Remember the day when I said, The End of my Addiciton? Those words you said were sort of pulled me one up everytime a craving strikes. But then again, I probably needed more encouragements from many of you. And you know what, it only happened for just about a month, but now it’s as if the habit is back.

I am not asking everyone to send me text messages thru my cellphone but I will do appreciate if you could send me some short messages everytime you come in to visit my blog. I’m begging you on bended knees. Kindly leave your nice comments here to helping me make this thing work. I mean, seriously.

  1. I quit about 2 years ago, having smoked 20 a day for 9 years. I found it tremendously satisfying to be back in control and for me this was a bigger benefit than getting my health back. I guess others have different motivations.

just stop. don’t believe in those “gradual withdrawal” or nicotine gums or patches. just stop.

if you get the urge to smoke, drink water instead.

it worked for my husband (who’s the worst quitter in the world), i’m sure it’ll work for you, too. :)
    kaya mo iyan! :)

  3. K says:

Thanks Duke, quitting is tough but I’ll always take my chances.

    K,

my husband tried to quit smoking quite a number of times. He still ended up lighting a stick after a couple of days. Now, he is again on his nth time trying to quit. It’s not easy at all but I believe it can be done.

I support you! Go and do something else instead of lighting a fag.

  5. K says:

Sad to say, there’s no such “quit smoking text message program” in HK and no it’s not weird. It’s strange, true, but why not give it a shot? The worst thing that could happen is we continue to smoke - on the other hand it may just work you know. It may just take will power to quit but I’m trying again for the sake of my health. :0

  8. Scott says:

    Hi!
Your blog is interesting. I will be back again. Take care.

  9. K says:

Yup, not smart and fun anymore. My tiny home, clothing and breath will smell better. And more importantly, I will have extra money to save or to spend on things other than cigarettes. It’s easier to say than done, so please encourage me to really really commit on this.

  10. rho says:

you are definitely on your way to your goal for being pro-active about quitting! keep it up!

  11. K says:

Thanks mate, put something in my mouth please. A chewing sugarless gum will do. Or perhaps help me ‘keep my hands busy’, if you know what I mean.

  12. I know K that you can do that! I always believe in you.

  13. K says:

Alam mo ang ganda mo Dez. Salamat sa suporta, send your text vote a la Phil Idol. Hahaha.

  14. dez says:

cheers to you K! suportahan taka!

  15. K says:

Thanks Mayang. Help me throw away all my ashtrays, matches, and lighters. But don’t avoid me because I smell like an ashtray at the moment. I know this is going to be a hard one to knock but I’m hoping to even put the coffee off my shelves. Salamat.

  16. Mayang says:

all the luck and love on your new goal K! :D
    you can do it! ;)

Ms GRACE! Aba at nag-eenjoy ka pala sa Pinas. I totally forgot about your vacation. If only you’re here (or me in Pinas) I would kindly ask you to pick me up to find a pretty place to walk and breathe deeply together.

Break a leg. I miss you gazillion times on my blog. Pasalubong naman ng isang paketeng Marlboro please, tapos sisindihan ko lang sya at titingnan habang nauupos na parang kandila.

  18. grace says:

tito K!!! miss you! still here in pinas doing some paper (trail)work!!!

re quit smoking: You can do it just put your mind and heart to it … just recently i have pangs of pain in my throat and i kinda relate it to my smoking … kaya for now i’m on strike from puffing …

    KAYA MO YAN!!!

  19. K says:

Nag me! Nag me! I want somebody who keeps reminding me that. On the day that I quit, I told all of my friends. Some laughed, others looked at me kind of strangely, and a few dared me to actually follow through with it. ’twas a bit of a challenge for me but now that I am back with the habit, I really need people who tells me straight into my face like “Quit, once and for all”. I guess that would help, right?

  20. Wengistein says:

Of course, if you have a constant reminder to stop smoking then yeah, you would have a better chance because it’s like someone’s always nagging you to stop or something.

Good luck with your quitting. :)

  21. K says:

I was nearly finishing college, ugh that was a few long years ago, when it started out of curiosity. Now that I realized the bad effect of smoking, I made an attempt to quit the first few months but I slipped and here I am smoking again. I’m not discouraged at all. I believe that many people would try several times before they finally quit (maybe I didn’t really commit to it very seriously). But you know, my attempting to quit is already a positive thing so thank you for the support.

  22. Daijinryuu says:

Exactly when and why did you begin to smoke? My elders I can understand more than our generation because of the facts we now have…but I think the government (of the States) should either outright ban it like almost all the other drugs, or lift the bans on the other drugs, because they all accelerate death either way…

  23. K says:

I’m so impressed. If you can stop, I can too, right? I honeslty think that a person must be committed to the quitting, I’m lack of that, I know that it is a very serious lifestyle change, so a few many times ago, I tried to past the cravings. I started with taking a lot of water, breathing deeply, moving around, and keeping my hands busy (not to confused with the other things people have in mind hehehe) just to distract myself from thinking about smoking. But that doesn’t work. Sometimes, I feel irritable and having headaches. But I’m giving it another try. Thanks for the encouragement.
