Easter with flickr

As with most holidays, Easter has sparked traditions and customs all its own. People all over the world have different ways to recognize the death and resurrection of Christ as well as celebrate the coming of spring.

These are the symbols for Easter which I’ve collected from flickr.com telling us that Jesus has risen!

I might have to try Lan Kwai Fong—thank you for the tip! Might be a side to Hong Kong I have not encountered before, certainly not from my childhood.

Those live bands around Wanchai has changed in many years. There are many young groups playing rock and roll - too different now, technology plays a great role somehow. You know what, for as long as there are many Filipino musicians around in HK, music entertainment will never go away. Try Lan Kwai Fong area in Central, they are everywhere.

  8. Jack Yan says:

What a shame some of those records had to be dumped. Yes, I know the sorts of bands you mean—jazz is the genre I listen to most. There’s an amazing history behind those big jazz bands—I hope some day someone writes about people like your father and the other musicians who toured in the region.

  9. K says:

I remember a year ago when I moved to this new Apartment, he owned a thousands of vynil records from Dizzy Gillespie, all kinds of Jazz. I’ve thrown them away since there was a leaking problem in my old Apt and all was damaged. My brothers (also musicians) decided that we dumped it anyways. He was a trumpheter and he was one of the best local musician of his time in HK. You know those Big Jazz Bands. They called themselves The Red Pepper Band. He was not that popular really but because he has 8 kids to feed and go to school because of him, that made him popular I guess. I think he used to work with the great Maria Cordero. She was married to a Filipino musician, however divorced after a while. He plays in one of the chinese ballroom when it was so popular around here. When I was a kid, when he comes home for a visit, he teaches us to play the music and read the notes. I always ran away hahaha because it wasn’t my thing. As I recall back those times, I realized maybe I can learn how to sing now. His family was all into music, well still is but it’s different now.

  10. Jack Yan says:

Sorry to hear your father had passed. My mother passed 12 years ago, aged 54. I hope you don’t mind my asking (and please feel free to not reply if you feel uncomfortable): what sort of music was your Dad into?

  11. K says:

I think people does that in many parts of the world. How lucky that your father writes them in a card. I grew up until finished school only with my Mother around. My Dad (he passed away 7 yrs ago) has been working for the family away from us. He was a musician moved from one place to another, went to Japan and spent his time longer in HK, that’s how I got here. He was a very good father. he sent us cards on our birthday with a thousand dollars inside the card. Ok now I’m going senti. :(

  12. Jack Yan says:

We also never did the Easter bunny thing. I just never accepted Santa Claus and the Christmas card ‘from Santa’ had my father’s handwriting. I don’t know if I would pass those traditions on. It may depend on whomever I have kids with. Something to worry about when that happens!

  13. K says:

I don’t believe in Santa itself - funny that I even saw my parents filling those old socks with candies. I was a silly kid who wakes up early and curious to find out who Santa really was. It turned out he was just my parents. And as I grow older, I realized when I have my own family (God knows when) I’ll pass this traditions too. I think Christmas around here is all about spending of triple digits gift-buying.

  14. Jack Yan says:

I love the story! Amazing what kids are told. I had a toy car with a ‘29’ sticker on the side and my cousin told me that the number would increase to 30 the following year.
I went to a church school and always just took it for granted that Christ could rise. I just accepted it, but I was a Santa Claus sceptic, so it’s not as though I accept eevrything told to me! It’s only as an adult that I thought Easter even more significant; plus it speaks to human potential and spirituality.

  15. K says:

Hi Jack, when I was a kid, it always remind me to climb on the table and jump in the aerie. My parents say, Jesus is alive and I must celebrate it and at the same time, grew up once inch taller. However, I’m still short now that Ive grown. Funny huh? ;)

  16. Jack Yan says:

    Jesus Christ is risen!

  17. K says:

Happy Easter Daniel. I’m flattered whenever I see new ‘faces’ around here. Sometimes I think, I’ve probably spent my time online and link to many sites. Is that how you find my link? Thanks Daniel. ;)

  18. DanieL says:

    Happy Easter!

  19. K says:

Hey Mark, thanks for visiting. I love browsing at flickr and wish that I have a good camera for myself to take those kind of shots. Hong Kong celebrates the eggs & the bunnies - and mostly Spring fashion. ;)

  20. Mark Base says:

    Cool photos!
I’ve discovered that Swedes have some interesting ways of celebrating as well.
